What’s In Your Hands?

I remember a sermon that I heard once before where the minister spoke of when God told Moses how he was going to use him to deliver the people of Israel out of slavery from the Egyptians.

Exodus 4:1-4

1. And Moses answered and said, “But suppose, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, ‘The Lord hath not appeared unto thee.’”

2. And the Lord said unto him, “What is that in your hand? And he said, “A rod.”

3. And He said, “Cast it down to the ground.” So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it.

4. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” (and he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand.)

Moses had a rod that could have been useful for many different things, but it certainly wasn’t capable of transforming itself into a serpent. Let alone, deliver a whole nation from bondage out of the hand of Egypt (Which was the superpower nation of its time). Something that was considered unimportant, average, or commonplace was empowered by God to become an instrument of greatness.

If you know anything about the rest of the story, Moses and his brother Aaron, along with that same ordinary rod, were instruments used to show signs and wonders to Pharaoh. Pharaoh continuously refused to let the people of Israel go. Ten Plagues later, Almighty God won, but Pharaoh, and his army, were wiped out. Meanwhile, the children of Israel safely crossed the Red Sea on dry ground at the end of that colossal victory. (Exodus 14:16-31)

As I reflect on that epic encounter Israel had with God, and I think about what was keeping me stagnated. I realized that there are things all around me that I could have picked up to create something new.

Take this blog for instance! My computer became a tool to use for many different things that I didn’t know that I would be doing. I published a book, created a website, graphic designed a few business logos, and started a YouTube channel.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m still new to these things. I’m building my confidence and consistency with it… but hey! I still think that I kicked fear and idleness in the face a little bit.

So, I’d like to know… What’s in your hands that was on your heart to do or create?  Is there anything that seems ordinary or common. Is there a simple hobby, a basic skill, a casual thought that you thought was too crazy, unimportant or too small? Maybe God wants to transform an average “thing” into an extraordinary moment for His glory. Remember, all He wants from us is a “Yes” to following HIM through this journey!

Is the thing that you’ve been searching for still something that hasn’t been discovered, or could it be something that God has already put into your hands? Surrender that thing to God and watch what it becomes.
